(BuzzJack.com) - New number ones for Simon Cowell in both charts this week.
The X-Factor takeover gathers pace this week with the top five dominated by acts associated with the show. Not content with a stream of singles and albums by former contestants, Simon Cowell has now decided to inflict the first solo single by WAG, Girls Aloud member and X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole on us. Predictably its terrible. Equally predictably its become the fastest selling single of the year so far and tops the chart this week. As a result, Alexandra Burke falls to number two after a single week on top. That makes it the 13th single to spend just one week at number one (excluding the two Black Eyed Peas singles which each spent a single week there on two separate occasions).
The only song in the top five with no connection to the aforementioned programme, Oopsy Daisy by Chipmunk, stays at number three. Robbie Williams falls two places to number four and Whitney Houstons performance on the show sees her rise nine places to number five, her first top ten single for ten years.
One of the best anthemic rock bands to emerge this decade are The Killers with All These Things That Ive Done being one of their best songs. The news that a selection of UK urban acts such as N-Dubz, Frankmusik and Chipmunk were going to collaborate on a version of the song, centred on the classic line Ive got soul but Im not a soldier didnt exactly fill me with joy. Even the fact that it was being sold in aid of the War Child charity which does some excellent work supporting child victims of war didnt lead to any great optimism. In the event, I actually rather like their version. The song, renamed I Got Soul, is the second highest new entry of the week at number ten.
The Danes of Alphabeat have their first hit of this year withThe Spell. While Fascination was decent enough, this is just irritating. Good Girls Go Bad by Cobra Starship, a new entry at number 17, is also rubbish. Generic American rock sums it up nicely.
Foo Fighters roll back into the charts with Wheels at number 22. Standard Foo Fighters stuff really. Ive never been a fan and Im still not. Equally, Calvin Harriss Flashback doesnt exactly represent a major departure from his usual output. However, in his case, that means that, once again, its far better than most dance music. The song is new at number 30. Paolo Nutini shows his Latin roots at number 33 with Pencil Full of Lead which sounds rather rude.
There are two re-entries. Christina Aguilera returns at number 25 with Hurt no surprise for guessing why this terrible song is back. Mr. Hudsons Supernova is back in at number 32. Sex on Fire moves on to 44 weeks in the chart and Im Yours is in for a 29th week putting it on a par with, among others, The Beatles She Loves You and Leader of the Pack by The Shangri-Las.
The top of the albums chart is dominated by new entries this week with five of them plus a re-entry in the top ten. Leading the way is Alexandra Burkes debut album Overcome. Michael Bublé enters at number two with Crazy Love, matching the performance of his last studio album Call Me Irresponsible. OK, I will. Mr. Bublé, releasing another album of bland tosh is a very irresponsible thing to do. Dont do it again. Whitney Houston enters at number three with I Look To You while her Ultimate Collection returns to the top 40 at number 22.
Seasick Steve was already in his sixties when he released his debut album in 2004. His career got a massive boost from an appearance on Jools Hollands annual Hootenanny and he eventually had a top ten album with I Started Out With Nothing and I Still Got Most Of It Left last year. His new album, Man From Another Time has out-performed that album by entering at number four.
Spandau Ballets comeback gigs have been greeted with some very good reviews. The band, whose sound is very 1980s, have released their first new album for twenty years, Once More, which is a new entry at number seven. Still with the 1980s, one of the most distinctive (and, indeed, best) voices of that decade belonged to Alison Moyet. Originally half of Yazoo (and known briefly as Alf), the Billericay lass went on to enjoy a successful solo career. A new Best Of collection (with a second disc of live recordings) is at number 17.
The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac originally reached number seven in 2002. Now a new version of the album has been released and it enters this week at a new peak of number six. Rammsteins chart career cannot exactly be described as glorious. They have had four top 40 singles with a peak of number 30. Their previous best position in the albums chart was number 29 with Rosenrot in 2005. The Berliners have now achieved their greatest chart success with Liebe Ist Fűr Alle Da entering at number 16. If my schoolboy German is reliable, the title means something like Love Is There For Everyone. Isnt that sweet? The lowest new entry for a new studio album is as high as number 25 with Mr. Hudsons first album Straight No Chaser.
The flood of new entries has contributed to some spectacular falls within the top 40. Last weeks number one from Editors has dropped out of the top ten to this weeks number 12, Madonnas Celebration falls 11 places to number 14 and Barbra Streisand plummets 19 places to number 26 just two weeks after she topped the chart. Even more spectacularly, Shakira crashes 24 places to number 28 and The Saturdays drop a massive 31 places to number 40. It remains the case that some acts can sell huge numbers of singles, other acts clock up huge album sales but relatively few manage both.
