Carey, who has started work on her 13th studio LP after cancelling remix album Angels Advocate, was seen via a live stream in the studio with long-time collaborators Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox.
Dupri, who last worked on Carey's E=MC2 LP, said: "Today is the first day, we're giving you the first day of the process.
"We're doing the best we can to make another song of the decade. It's up to you guys, you gotta make it be that."
Carey, who also worked with Dupri on her international hit 'We Belong Together', said: "We knew that we belonged together in the studio, and we've been trying to do this for a long time, and for certain reasons..."
Dupri added: "We're here to make it happen - stick and stay. This is the first day of the new sh*t."
