At Chanel, Eyes Stay On The Prize
The lash embellishments and smoldering eyes Peter Philips turned out for Chanel’s Fall and Resort collections, respectively, are forever burned into our memory. But the makeup star still managed to impress us with his craftsmanship at the house’s Couture show yesterday when he took the classic cat-eye and blew it out of proportion, quite literally, making it thicker, pointier, and more dramatic than we’re used to seeing it. “We wanted to create something that was a mix between sixties and punk,” Philips said of the inspiration for the look. “Some of the embroideries on Karl’s creations are reminiscent of studs, and at the same time there was a 1960’s elegance. That’s why we went for the graphic black eyeliner.” And how does one pull this off, if, say, one were in the business of trying to emulate the creative director of makeup’s every move? 1. Look straight into the mirror and use an eyeliner pencil, like Chanel’s Automatic Liquid Eyeliner, to mark with small dots where you want the eyeliner to start and end.



2. Close one eye and connect the dots. Note: Depending on the shape (and age) of the eyes, this line might be straight or zigzag.



3. Finish by lining the inner rim of the eye with a pencil liner and apply a few coats of black mascara, like Chanel’s Inimitable Mascara in Noir-Black, on the top lashes only.
